Volunteer Opportunities

DOCENTS – Docents welcome and orient visitors to the Museum.  They must develop a thorough knowledge of both the Civil War and Western Art galleries and be able to give a tour to a visitor if asked. Docents are stationed at the Museum’s welcome desk and generally work one shift per week: (M-F) 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. or 1 p.m. – 4 p.m.

SCHOOL PROGRAM GUIDES “SPG”- SPGs work as a team with staff and other volunteers to conduct educational programs for school groups which can range in size from 15 to 150.  Special training is provided so that the school tours best reflect curriculum TEKS requirements.  Flexible schedules are encouraged.

INDEXING VOLUNTEERS – Indexers work in-depth with the Museum’s Civil War collection by reading transcripts of 150 year old documents.  While reading these documents, such as letters and diaries, volunteers use predetermined themes and topics to index the collection.  The ultimate goal of the indexing project is to make the entire Civil War collection searchable to the general public.

SCANNING VOLUNTEERS – These volunteers work directly with the collection to scan the Civil War documents under the guidance of the Archivist.  Scanners will need an above average working knowledge of the computer.  Limited positions available.

GENERAL PROJECTS & EVENTS – Sometimes volunteers are requested to help with mail outs or with special events.  It’s another opportunity to get to know your fellow volunteers.
