 VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

DOCENTSDocents welcome and orient visitors to the Museum.  They must develop a thorough knowledge of both the Civil War and Western Art galleries and be able to give a tour to a visitor if asked. Docents are stationed at the Museum’s welcome desk and generally work one shift per week:

(M-F) 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. or 1 p.m. – 4 p.m.

SCHOOL PROGRAM GUIDESSPGs work as a team with staff and other volunteers to conduct educational programs for school groups which can range in size from 15 to 150.  Special training is provided so that the school tours best reflect curriculum TEKS requirements.  Flexible schedules are encouraged.

INDEXING VOLUNTEERSIndexers work in-depth with the Museum’s Civil War collection by reading transcripts of 150 year old documents.  While reading these documents, such as letters and diaries, volunteers use predetermined themes and topics to index the collection.  The ultimate goal of the indexing project is to make the entire Civil War collection searchable to the general public.

SCANNING VOLUNTEERSThese volunteers work directly with the collection to scan the Civil War documents under the guidance of the Archivist.  Scanners will need an above average working knowledge of the computer.  Limited positions available.

GENERAL PROJECTS & EVENTSSometimes volunteers are requested to help with mail outs or with special events.  It’s another opportunity to get to know your fellow volunteers.

Membership stuffMembership in the Pearce Museum is your chance to become a part of something extraordinary.  There are few places in the country where you can see collections of this caliber – thousands of handwritten first-hand accounts of our nation’s bloodiest conflict, the American Civil War; and art of the American West, a truly American-themed artistic expression that reflects the colorful culture of our pioneering past and uniquely American roots.   Our goal at the Pearce Museum is to spark an appreciation for the Civil War and art of the American West through exhibitions, events, educational programs and collections.  We wish to provide a museum experience that is both educational and entertaining in an environment where visitors always feel welcome.
